State of the City Address 2012

Belvidere-Boone County Planning Department

Press Release April 25, 2012

Downtown Revitalization Strategy

The City of Belvidere hired the Peoples Economic Development Corporation to develop a downtown revitalization strategy with proceeds from a CDAP grant. Elements of the project are: concept drawings for revitalizing four downtown buildings; concept drawings for the revitalization of the Leath Warehouse/riverfront area; a survey of downtown properties; National Register Nominations for portions of the downtown area; and a downtown revitalization plan. The goal for creating national register historic districts is to create awareness of the downtown historic properties and to create a tool for redevelopment incentives as national register properties are eligible for income tax credits.

A local public information meeting regarding the proposed national register districts presented by Nick Dorochoff will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 5:30 pm in the Belvidere City Council Chambers located at 401 Whitney Boulevard.  Please click on the links below to view the the Belvidere National Register Nominations.

The Belvidere Fire Department periodically flushes fire hydrants throughout the year.  During the flushing process, the potable water is safe for consumption.  However, when flushing occurs in close proximity to your residence, the City recommends that you refrain from laundering clothing.

CITIZEN CORPS COUNCIL:

President Bush has called all Americans to volunteer 2 years or the equivalent of 4000 hours of service to their communities over the course of their lifetime. To assist the citizens of Belvidere in fulfilling that call, the City of Belvidere has established a Citizen Corps Council.

SEWER BACKUPS:

Connection of storm water sump pumps to the City's sanitary sewer system is prohibited. Such connections quickly overload the system in severe rain events and may cause sewers to back up.

In the future, residents may receive notice to schedule an appointment for an inspection. Please respond within the time specified to assist the Department with preventing future sanitary sewer backups. If you have questions or concerns, please call 815-544-9256.
